Job Opportunity:
Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance (BHSI) has an exciting opportunity for a Senior Underwriter to join our Property team in Melbourne. This role will be working closely with our Actuaries, Claims team, Legal, Operations, as well as Underwriters from across the broader team to build our Property business within the global broker space.
We are seeking an individual who is intelligent, passionate, and has strong relationship building and negotiation skills. The successful candidate will be focused on a positive customer experience, while maintaining sound underwriting discipline. This position is a great fit for an experienced Underwriter looking to expand their responsibilities, marketing capabilities and underwriting knowledge with an experienced and well-regarded unit within a top global insurance company.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Develop and build a profitable the Property book of business which includes primary/excess layers, multi-year policies and other bespoke structural placements.
- Establish, develop, and expand broker and customer relationships to maximise new and renewal business opportunities across the national broker distribution channel.
- Manage assigned accounts and service existing renewal portfolio while ensuring appropriate analysis and documentation.
- Underwrite complex and challenging risks within BHSI’s risk appetite while developing creative solutions for our partners.
- Work closely with our in-house claims team to help create a positive and transparent experience for our customers.
- Work in a fast-paced environment, multi-task, and make quick decisions while maintaining underwriting integrity and focusing on underwriting profit.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- At least 5 years’ insurance/underwriting experience.
- Existing broker and customer relationships, or the experience and ability to develop strong broker and customer relationships quickly.
- Strong underwriting acumen.
- Experience and strong understanding of policy forms, including broker manuscripts.
- Experience marketing to focused brokers.
- Proven customer development experience preferred.
- Good understanding of CAT peril modeling/pricing preferred.
- Strong collaboration and team building skills.
- Strong communication skills including negotiation, communications and presentation experience.
- Willing to travel as required.
- Degree or equivalent education, and/or strong insurance qualifications are preferred.
