Senior Complex Claims Director, Third Party Lines

Job Opportunity:

Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance (BHSI) is seeking a highly skilled Senior Complex Claims Director to join our growing Third-Party Claims team in Toronto. In this role, you will leverage your expertise in claims analysis, coverage interpretation, negotiation, and stakeholder management to independently manage a diverse portfolio of complex Financial Lines claims, including Directors & Officers (D&O), Errors & Omissions (E&O), Professional Liability, and Life Agent/Broker Dealer matters. Experience with Fiduciary and/or Fidelity/Crime claims is highly valued.

You will play a critical role in driving timely, fair, and strategic claim resolutions while partnering with insureds, brokers, counsel, underwriters, and senior leadership. This position offers the opportunity to influence outcomes on high-impact claims while contributing to BHSI's reputation for technical excellence and exceptional customer service.

Duties & Responsibilities:

As a Senior Complex Claims Director, you will apply your claims expertise, analytical judgment, and relationship-building skills to:

• Independently manage complex Financial Lines claims from first notice of loss through final resolution.
• Evaluate coverage, liability, damages, and litigation exposures to determine appropriate claim strategies and outcomes.
• Develop and execute proactive claim resolution plans that balance customer needs, policy obligations, and business objectives.
• Analyze policy language and apply contract interpretation skills to coverage determinations.
• Draft clear, concise, and well-supported coverage position letters and other claim-related communications.
• Partner with defense counsel to develop litigation strategy, assess risk, and pursue favorable claim outcomes.
• Engage effectively in mediations, settlement negotiations, and dispute resolution discussions.
• Establish, monitor, and adjust reserves based on evolving claim facts and exposure analyses.
• Build trusted relationships with insureds, brokers, customers, and external stakeholders through responsive and professional claim handling.
• Prepare reports, recommendations, and presentations for management regarding claim developments and exposure trends.
• Represent BHSI at mediations, client meetings, conferences, and industry events as needed.

Skills & Competencies

We are looking for candidates who can demonstrate the following capabilities:

Claims Management & Technical Expertise

• Proven ability to independently handle complex Financial Lines claims through all stages of the claim lifecycle.
• Strong understanding of coverage analysis, liability assessment, damages evaluation, and litigation management.
• Experience interpreting policy language and applying coverage provisions to real-world claim scenarios.

Analytical Problem Solving

• Ability to analyze complex facts, identify key issues, evaluate risk, and make sound claim decisions.
• Demonstrated ability to assess financial exposure and develop practical resolution strategies.

Communication & Negotiation

• Strong written communication skills with experience drafting coverage letters, reports, and claim recommendations.
• Effective negotiation and conflict-resolution skills in high-stakes situations.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

• 15+ years of industry experience, including at least 5 years in insurance claims, coverage litigation, defense litigation, or a related field.
• University degree required; Juris Doctor (JD) preferred.
• Demonstrated experience handling one or more of the following:
  • Directors & Officers (D&O) claims
  • Errors & Omissions (E&O) claims
  • Professional Liability claims
  • Life Agent/Broker Dealer claims
  • Fiduciary claims
  • Fidelity/Crime claims
• Experience participating in mediations, settlement negotiations, or litigation management.
• Strong organizational and time-management skills with the ability to manage multiple complex matters simultaneously.
