Job Opportunity:

We have an exciting opportunity for a dynamic and experienced Senior Claims Consultant to join our Sydney office. At Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance (BHSI), we view every claim as an opportunity to build trust and strengthen relationships. In this external-facing role, you will support our Marine Claims offering, with a particular focus on Marine Liability, Hull, and Cargo, working closely with insureds, brokers, and internal stakeholders to deliver outstanding claims outcomes.

The ideal candidate will bring proven experience in assessing insurance claims across complex sectors such as logistics, transport, ports, cargo terminals, and freight forwarding. This role will enhance our in-house claims handling capabilities by effectively engaging loss adjusters and legal service providers in both claims assessment and litigation matters, ensuring strong outcomes for our customers. A solid foundation in the principles of liability is essential including the concepts surrounding negligence and contractual liabilities, with additional benefits in understanding international conventions governing the carriage of goods, domestic legislation, and the logistics chain.

The successful candidate will demonstrate sound judgment, strategic thinking, and the ability to build strong relationships with our brokers and customers. You’ll bring strong communication and analytical skills, and thrive both independently and as part of a collaborative, cross-functional team.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Proactively manage a broad portfolio of Marine claims from first notice of loss through to ultimate resolution in accordance with the BHSI Claims Service Standards.
  • Providing high level customer service and technical claims management with a proactive approach to achieving strong results for our customers.
  • Investigate and assess claims, including coverage analysis, liability evaluation, reserve setting, and risk management opportunities.
  • Identify and pursue subrogation and salvage opportunities.
  • Engage external experts (loss adjusters, legal counsel) when appropriate to support claims resolution.
  • Communicate clearly and effectively with insureds and brokers to achieve optimal outcomes.
  • Collaborate with underwriting and actuarial teams to support the broader Marine portfolio.
  • Attend client and broker meetings, mediations, and industry events as needed.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in claims handling or legal practice, with a focus on Liability and/or Marine.
  • Background in transport & logistics or legal advisory is highly regarded.
  • Strong analytical and decision-making skills, with the ability to manage complex claims independently.
  • A customer-first mindset.
  • Excellent communication and negotiation skills.
  • Ability to work effectively both autonomously and within a team.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple claims across different products.
