  • Draft underwriting criteria and develop a framework for assessing risk.
  • Lead portfolio management activities ensuring that the portfolio remains within appetite.
  • Ensure our activities in building a middle market business align with and assist in the continued growth of our existing surety business.
  • Work closely in collaborative team environment
  • Collaborate with brokers and customers in developing mutually beneficial relationships.
  • Ensure appropriate file documentation and compliance.
  • Stay informed about the competitive landscape and the product line’s unique risk profile.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • College degree or equivalent with a minimum of 15-20 years of experience serving Middle Market Contractors either as an underwriter, broker, or both.
  • Experience at a national level or multiple geographies will be a plus.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Must be collaborative and team-focused with strong interpersonal, communication and negotiation skills.

Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance (BHSI) is seeking a Senior Product Owner to join the Berxi team in Boston. In this role, you’ll be responsible for defining and delivering product capabilities that align with business objectives and customer needs. This role serves as the primary liaison between business stakeholders and Agile development teams, ensuring that product investments deliver measurable value and support strategic goals. You’ll support the migration of insurance policy administration systems and microservice refactoring as part of a large-scale digital platform transformation initiative.

  • Support the evolution of API-first and microservices-based architectures that improve scalability, maintainability, and speed to market.
  • Develop a strong understanding of backend systems, integration patterns, APIs, event-driven architectures, and cloud-native technologies.
  • Prioritize digital capabilities that enhance customer, agent, and employee experiences while maintaining alignment with enterprise architecture standards.

Business and System Analysis

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Manage and adjust construction casualty claims impacting primary and excess policies while ensuring the highest level of customer service and technical claim file quality.
  • Proactively handle claims from first notice of loss through ultimate resolution, while advising internal partners and meeting with clients and brokers.
  • Collaborate and partner with the insured and broker in the handling and adjudication of claims.
  • Analyze and draft coverage letters as appropriate and communicate coverage positions effectively.

Job Opportunity:

At BHSI, you’ll work with our growing Catastrophe Engineering and Analytics (CAT E&A) team to determine and present BHSI’s view of the catastrophe risk for individual accounts as well as to assist with catastrophe risk assessment for the company’s global property portfolio. You’ll make an impact on the team by analyzing individual accounts using vendor models and internal models and tools, assisting with individual underwriting decisions, and accumulation analyses. As a member of the CAT team, you will also work in functional groups to help refine BHSI’s internal view of catastrophe risk. The Senior Catastrophe Analyst/Catastrophe Analyst opportunity can be based in our San Ramon, Boston, or Atlanta office, and will report to the Lead of US Accounts.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Complete CAT assessment on individual accounts using vendor models and internal models and tools.
  • Explain CAT modeling concepts and results to underwriters to inform risk decisions.
  • Conduct periodic training for underwriters.
  • Work with team to incorporate BHSI’s view of risk into CAT modeling tools and platform.
  • Provide guidance to India account modeling operations.
  • Help to improve account evaluation process and tools.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • Drive technical design discussions and contribute to architecture decisions that promote scalability, reliability, security, and maintainability.
  • Design and develop RESTful APIs, event-driven services, and integrations supporting internal and external business capabilities.
  • Translate business requirements into high-quality technical solutions and implementation plans.
  • Take ownership of complex features and initiatives from concept through production deployment and ongoing support.
  • Contribute to system modernization efforts, technical roadmaps, and continuous platform improvements.
  • Partner with architects and engineering leaders to ensure alignment with enterprise standards and long-term technology strategy.
  • Lead by example through strong engineering practices and collaboration.

Engineering Excellence & Quality

  • Write clean, maintainable, secure, and well-tested code following established engineering standards and best practices.
  • Champion code quality through peer reviews, automated testing, and continuous integration and deployment practices.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex application, performance, scalability, and production issues.
  • Participate in root-cause analysis and implement sustainable solutions.
  • Contribute to observability, monitoring, logging, and performance optimization initiatives.
  • Ensure solutions meet security, compliance, and operational standards.

Collaboration & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Partner closely with Product Owners, Business Analysts, Architects, QA Engineers, and stakeholders.
  • Participate in backlog refinement, sprint planning, estimation, technical design sessions, demonstrations, and retrospectives.
  • Communicate complex technical concepts effectively to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Build strong relationships across business and technology teams.

Continuous Improvement & Innovation

  • Identify opportunities to improve code quality, system architecture, development processes, and team productivity.
  • Evaluate and recommend modern technologies, frameworks, and engineering practices.
  • Promote a culture of ownership, accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.

Tools & Environment

  • Work within a cloud-native, distributed application environment utilizing modern engineering tools and platforms.
  • Leverage CI/CD pipelines, monitoring tools, containerized deployments, and Azure cloud services.
  • Support production readiness activities, deployment automation, and operational monitoring.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or a related discipline preferred.
  • 5-7 years of progressive software development experience with demonstrated success delivering enterprise-grade applications.
  • Experience with AI-assisted coding tools like GitHub Copilot.
  • Strong proficiency in C# or similar object-oriented programming languages, applying SOLID principles and writing clean, maintainable code.
  • Solid front-end development experience using Angular or similar frameworks, building responsive and accessible user interfaces.
  • Working knowledge of relational databases, NoSQL databases, and caching systems including SQL Server, Cosmos DB, and Redis with understanding of schema design and query optimization.
  • Experience designing, developing, and supporting scalable RESTful APIs, micro or domain-bounded services, and service-oriented architectures.
  • Experience building and supporting cloud-native applications and distributed systems.
  • Hands-on experience with Azure cloud services and modern cloud architecture patterns.
  • Experience with containerization technologies and modern deployment methodologies.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience with Duck Creek Policy Administration System is a plus.
  • Experience leading technical initiatives or serving as a technical lead on significant projects.
  • Ability to influence cross-functional teams and drive consensus on technical decisions.
  • Strong stakeholder management and relationship-building capabilities.

The base salary range for this position in Boston, MA is $120,000 to $150,000, along with annual bonus eligibility. Total compensation for a candidate is determined by their relevant skills, location, and experience.
