Job Opportunity:

Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance (BHSI) has an exciting opportunity for a Senior Property Underwriter to join our new team based in Bilbao, Spain.

This is a unique opportunity to be part of the early development of the Property portfolio in Bilbao, underwriting General Property risks while helping to establish BHSI’s presence in the market through broker and client engagement.

The role involves driving new business through production and marketing activities, building strong relationships with distribution partners, prequalifying opportunities, and applying underwriting expertise to deliver profitable growth within company guidelines.

We are seeking an experienced and collaborative Property underwriter who strives for excellence in both risk analysis and service delivery. You will work closely with Claims, Risk Control engineers, and colleagues across the wider organization, with strong data and file management discipline expected.

Strong relationship-building, negotiation, and influencing skills are essential to help develop a profitable book of business and support the growth of this new office.

This is an excellent opportunity for a Senior Property Underwriter looking to broaden their responsibilities and play a key role in the early stages of regional growth within a leading global insurer.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Support the build-out and development of the Property portfolio in Bilbao with a focus on profitable growth, particularly across medium to high severity occupancy types.
  • Establish, develop, and expand broker and customer relationships to grow the BHSI presence in the Bilbao market.
  • Underwrite assigned Property accounts while ensuring appropriate analysis, pricing, and documentation, maintaining strong underwriting discipline and service standards.
  • Underwrite complex and challenging Property risks while developing tailored solutions for brokers and customers.
  • Lead and execute production and marketing activities, including broker visits and client meetings, to establish BHSI’s footprint in the region.
  • Collaborate closely with Claims, Risk Control engineers, and underwriting colleagues across the broader organization.
  • Support and contribute to the successful launch and ongoing development of BHSI Bilbao.
  • Effectively communicate the BHSI value proposition in all market interactions.

 

 

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • 5+ years of underwriting experience in General Property, preferably within an international insurance environment.
  • Strong understanding of Property underwriting, including risk assessment, pricing, and portfolio management with a focus on profitability over volume.
  • Existing broker and customer relationships, or the ability to quickly establish and develop strong market relationships.
  • Experience underwriting complex Property risks and familiarity with medium to high severity exposures.
  • Strong knowledge of policy wordings, including broker manuscripts and experience with national and multinational programs.
  • Strong collaboration and team-building skills, with the ability to work effectively across functions and geographies.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and presentation skills, with experience engaging directly with brokers and clients.
  • Analytical mindset with a structured, data-driven approach to underwriting and decision-making.
  • Fluency in Spanish and a good working knowledge of English (written and spoken).
  • Willingness to travel as part of market engagement and business development activities.
