Job Opportunity:
Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance (BHSI) has an exciting opportunity for a Senior Underwriter or Assistant Vice-President Commercial Automobile to join our expanding team of industry leaders in our Toronto office location. The position is responsible for the procurement and underwriting of Canadian domiciled primary automobile business.
This is a market facing position wherein a successful candidate will be tasked with managing and growing their own profitable portfolio of primary commercial automobile fleets across multiple industry segments and amongst both regional and national broker channels.

The Senior Underwriter or Assistant Vice-President Commercial Automobile will be responsible for developing new business opportunities through production & marketing calls with brokers and clients, prequalifying new business, and utilizing underwriting acumen to select sound commercial automobile fleet and garage risks and negotiate best deals. The successful candidate will also handle renewal business within company guidelines and maintain profitability. The candidate will demonstrate their experience with underwriting commercial automobile fleet business by developing and growing our commercial automobile product lines in Canada.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Underwrite, rate and issue commercial fleet and garage business across Canada in support of casualty and other product lines.
- Knowledge of and previous exposure to Contingent Lessors and Non-Owned Automobile policies will be an asset.
- Develop and maintain a profitable renewal book. Work closely with loss control and claims to provide solutions to customers.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, multi-task, and make quick decisions while maintaining underwriting integrity.
- Work closely with actuarial, claims, and legal teams to assist them in providing required statistical reporting data, if needed.
- Assist with the updating of underwriting guides and rating tools as necessary.
- Travel within Canada and occasionally to the U.S.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- At least 7 years of commercial automobile fleet and garage underwriting experience is required.
- National account experience would be an asset.
- Strong underwriting acumen with the ability to be disciplined and underwrite to bottom line profitability.
- Existing relationships with tier 1 and 2 broker partners would be an asset.
- Strong communication skills including advanced negotiation and presentation experience.
- Strong Microsoft Office skills including Excel, Word, Outlook.
- Previous experience implementing commercial automobile product line will be a definite asset.
- Completion of or near completion of CIP, FCIP and or CRM designations will set you apart from other candidates.

The base salary range for this position in Canada is 120,000 CAD to 150,000 CAD, along with annual bonus eligibility.
