Job Title: Storm Surge Scientist (Boston, MA)
Job Duties: Conduct in-depth evaluation of vendor models, research and develop internal views of risks, consult on account-specific risk analyses, and develop internal tools to facilitate account underwriting decision-making and other related activities.
Specific duties include:
- Development of internal surge analytics based on the Sea, Lake and Overland Surges from Hurricanes (SLOSH) and Advanced Circulation (ADCIRC) models, as well as leveraging existing surge outputs available from National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
- Perform in-depth evaluation of the storm surge hazard components of vendor models.
- Use geospatial analytics to evaluate surge risk metrics and integrate results into the underwriting workflow.
- Communicate surge risk evaluation and development results to both internal and external stakeholders.
- Review accounts at risk for storm surge losses as part of the larger Catastrophe Engineering & Analytics processing.
- Provide operational assistance during real-time catastrophe events and contribute to real-time estimation of losses to the company portfolio and
- Conduct research on a wide range of natural hazard topics to develop risk management strategies.
Position Requirements: PhD degree (or foreign equivalent) in Marine Science, Physical Oceanography or a related field.
Experience must include the following coursework:
- Analyzing Hydrodynamics, storm surge and other coastal ocean processes.
- Developing hydrodynamic model grids using tools including SMS, QGIS, and MATLAB and setting up model inputs using bathymetric, topographic, meteorological, and oceanographic datasets.
- Running hydrodynamic models including SLOSH, ADCIRC, SCHISM, FVCOM, and Delft3D, and postprocessing model outputs using MATLAB or Python.
- Data visualization using MATLAB, python, and GIS tools including ArcGIS or QGIS.
- Statistical Analysis using R, MATLAB, python, and GIS tools and
- Catastrophe modeling.
