Job Opportunity:
BHSI has an incredible opportunity for an Underwriter to join and help build our Excess & Surplus Lines Small Business platform. It is an exciting time to join, as we launch a new business, with tremendous potential for upside and growth in 2025 and beyond. You will be joining a small, yet mighty team with the opportunity to make an immediate impact that drives further growth at BHSI.
This new position can be based in our Atlanta, Boston, New York City or Chicago office and would report to the Head of Excess & Surplus Lines Small Business.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Support the development and build-out of the Excess & Surplus Lines Small Business book of business.
- Collaborate with the team to set the business strategy contemplating desired industry sectors and lines of business.
- Assist with product development, underwriting appetite, guidelines and policy forms.
- Identify and develop new business pipelines and manage renewal retention to meet and exceed financial plans.
- Proactively interact and maintain relationships with intermediaries.
- Actively manage the evaluation, selection, and pricing of small business accounts.
- Work with the actuarial team to construct tools used for the assessment of new opportunities and the monitoring of the portfolio.
- Collaborate with the claims and legal teams to evaluate and build coverage forms.
- Create, evaluate and interpret data from various reports and adjust the portfolio accordingly.
- Be a positive reflection on the company by demonstrating integrity and leadership in the marketplace.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- A minimum of 5 years of prior Small Business insurance experience with an insurance carrier or insurance broking firm.
- Technical underwriting skill set with expertise in property, casualty, and professional lines.
- Strong portfolio management skills and deep external broker relationships.
- Experience and understanding of policy forms.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Excellent analytical and organizational skills.
- Advanced Excel skills, including familiarity with Lookup and PivotTable functions.

The base salary range for this position is from $90,000 to $135,000 along with annual bonus eligibility; a candidate’s actual salary is commensurate with their relevant experience and skills. We value our teammates – both their capabilities and character – as demonstrated by our amazing culture.
