Job Opportunity:
Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance has an exciting opportunity for a Senior Claims Examiner who has a passion for providing top notch customer service and claims excellence. This job will be ideally located in New York, Boston, Atlanta, Plymouth Meeting, or Chicago. The Senior Claims Examiner will handle a diverse mix of work consisting of claims against insurance agents, including property & casualty agents, financial advisers, and Broker-Dealers underwritten out of the Executive and Professional Liability division. Candidate must have strong technical and analytic skills, as well as excellent interpersonal skills, as this role will have a high level of interaction and visibility with customers, brokers, outside counsel (defense and coverage), mediators, underwriters, actuaries and senior management. This role is fully integrated with BHSI’s Underwriting Team and is a great opportunity for individuals with professional liability claims experience.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Responsible for managing and evaluating Life Agent/Broker-Dealer professional liability claims impacting primary and excess policies.
- Work with manager to evaluate information on coverage, liability and damages to determine the extent of exposure to the insured and the company, with assistance from outside counsel where appropriate.
- Collaborate and partner with Insureds and defense counsel on strategy and claim resolution.
- Duties include but are not limited to: proactively handling claim investigation from first notice of loss through ultimate resolution, liaising with defense counsel in developing a proactive plan of action for ultimate resolution, obtaining budgets, and meeting with customers, counsel and brokers.
- Provide outstanding customer service and technical expertise, working efficiently with the insured, brokers and underwriters in the handling and adjudication of claims.
- Analyze and draft coverage letters as appropriate and communicate coverage positions effectively.
- Draft reports and make recommendations concerning reserve changes.
- Travel to conferences, mediations and client meetings, as necessary.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- Professional liability claims or insurance defense experience at an insurance carrier or law firm preferred.
- Minimum 7 years of previous claims handling or defense firm experience required.
- College degree required. JD preferred.
- Background and understanding of life insurance and the securities markets are required.
- Excellent interpersonal, communications and negotiation skills required.
- Ability to thrive in a dynamic team environment.
