Job Opportunity:
BHSI has an exciting opportunity for an Assistant Vice President to join our Builder’s Risk team focused on underwriting property construction business in the United States. The candidate would ideally be based alongside our existing team located in Plymouth Meeting, PA., New York City, Atlanta or Boston. We are seeking an individual who is intelligent, passionate and strives towards excellence. The successful candidate will display strong written and verbal communication skills, sound analytical skills and hold the ability and confidence to work both independently and collaboratively across all levels and disciplines.
You will be working very closely with our underwriters to pre-qualify new business, analyze property and delay risk exposures and leverage experience and expertise to make sound underwriting decisions. Character is of the utmost importance as are relationship building and negotiation skills in this market facing role. Data and file management skills are also naturally a requirement of the role. The successful candidate will be focused on a positive customer experience while maintaining sound underwriting discipline. Applicants must possess an underwriting background and a technical and enquiring mindset together with a firm desire to continue their career at BHSI.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Underwrite and profitably grow the Erection All Risks (EAR) and Heavy Civil Engineering business within the BHSI risk appetite.
- Analyze natural catastrophe exposures and evaluate peril modelling and pricing.
- Expand and develop upon our existing broker and customer relationships.
- Make and take decisions with integrity and respect whilst always seeking to achieve an underwriting profit.
- Operate in a fast-paced environment with the ability to multi-task and prioritize.
- Travel within the United States.
- Contribute towards the development of construction underwriting at BHSI both in the USA and globally.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- Up to 5 years insurance market experience across Contractors All Risks (CAR), Erection All Risks (EAR) and Civil Works.
- Entrepreneurial and a motivated self-starter with a desire to collaborate and work within a wider team.
- Confident communicator with ability to listen, negotiate and present detailed proposals.
- Strong underwriting acumen and attention to detail.
- Proficient in reviewing policy wordings, evaluating broker manuscript forms and issuing policies.
- Good understanding of natural catastrophe peril modelling and pricing for multi-year construction policies.
- Strong broker relationships within the retail & wholesale brokerage community both regionally and nationally.
- Willing to travel on business as required.
- BA/BS degree qualified. Engineering degree preferred.

The base salary for this position in New York is from $130,000 to $175,000 along with annual bonus eligibility; a candidate’s salary is determined by their relevant skills and experience. We value our teammates- both their capabilities and character- as demonstrated by our amazing culture.
