Job Opportunity:
Join our Catastrophe Engineering and Analytics (CAT E&A) team for a 12-week, paid internship. The CAT E&A team is an innovative and dynamic group focused on catastrophe risk research and development, providing complex quantitative metrics to support underwriting decisions.
As an intern, you will gain hands-on experience in designing and developing systems to deploy and run models. You will work closely with cross-functional teams, including business, product, and data science, to drive successful project outcomes. Your focus will primarily be on backend development, but you will also gain exposure to building data pipelines, data manipulation, and building models.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with business stakeholders, data scientists, and engineers to complete an entire project.
- Make informed decisions on technology, architecture, and design, with guidance from the team.
- Write maintainable and well-tested code and contribute to system design.
- Build a robust, scalable product and gain insights into the business.
- Work with domain experts (engineers and scientists) across the CAT E&A team to enhance our use of available data.
Education, Skills and Experience:
- Proven coding and analytical skills as normally acquired through the pursuit of an undergraduate or graduate degree in Data Science, Machine learning, Computer Science, or a related field.
- Knowledge of probability theory, statistics, and machine learning methods.
- Ability to work as part of a team, as well as independently when needed.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Detail-oriented with the mindset to validate results, question inconsistencies, and present alternatives.
- Experience with Git, Python, SQL and Docker.
- Familiarity with a major cloud provider (AWS, GCP, Azure).
- Experience with databases, data processing, and data pipelines.
- Knowledge of machine learning and geospatial data.
- Experience with Docker and Kubernetes is preferred.

The base salary range for this position in California is from $25/hour – $29/hour; a candidate’s salary is determined by their relevant skills and experience. We value our teammates – both their capabilities and character – as demonstrated by our amazing culture.
